Sandese aate hain (Border) - with Roop kumar Rathod - Anu Malik - 1997

Heart warming lyrics - passionate rendition - earthy appealing music - An all time classic !
Trivia: When nominated alone for many popular awards for this song, Sonu Nigam refused to accept them unless Roop Kumar Rathod was also honored.

Tanhai (Dil Chahta Hai) - Shankar Ehsaan Loy - 2001

A powerful song depicting the pining of a spurned lover languishing in solitude, Sonu’s excellent vocals elevated the song to dizzy heights. Check out the brilliant camera work too - flash cuts showing a cemetery near the beach, the deserted underground train station - brilliant visual effects added to this songs quality.

Bol sajni (Doli saja ke rakhna) with Kavita Krishnamurthy - AR Rahman - 2000

A soothing melody with lovely drum beats and excellent orchestration (watch out especially for the trumpets)

Satrangi re (Dilse) with Kavita Krishnamurthy - AR Rahman - 1998

Ok, some ppl might feel Sonu was really stretching his vocal chords to the limit and literally shrieking but I beg to differ. There was a certain frenzied obsessive touch to the picturisation and Sonu matched that mood with his vocals. Chk out how effortlessly he moves into sixth gear(since I am not technically equipped to use the musical eqv, pardon me for my F1 comparison)

Pyaar Bhara Geet (LOC) with Shreya Ghoshal - Anu Malik - 2003

Gulzar - Anu - Sonu - The trio do it again !! Fantastic lyrics - mind blowing music - soulful rendition - a song which is bound to make anyone sit up and say YESSSSSS !! Just listen to it !

Khamoshiyaan (One Two Ka Four) with Lata Mangeshkar - AR Rahman - 2001

Again this song is more of Lata’s classic but its so mesmerizing beautiful when Sonu takes over for a few lines in the second stanza and proves his mastery over a tune which has shades of classical music. (Neone can gimme this Raga?)

Sooraj hua maddhum (K3G) - Sandesh Shandilya - 2001

Forgetting the fact that it was picturised on SRK, everything else abt this song is brilliant - Lovely lyrics , superb locales and most important of all, Sonu’s soothing voice. One of the best soft romantic numbers I have heard !

Yaar mangyaasi (Kaante) - Anand Raaj Anand - 2002

I cant seem to find out why I find this song very very special but the fact remains that in an album which had fast paced numbers, this song came as a welcome break ...And i’ve always had this fascination for Punjabi lyrics - so earthy and so sweet ! Besides Anand Raj Anand is one MD whoz great at giving melodies - neone remembers ’’Ghunghat mein chehra’’ by Hariharan sung for Inder Kumar. (I am digressing)

Kal Ho Na Ho (Kal Ho Na Ho) - shankar Ehsaan Loy - 2003

Sonu’s soulful rendition gives a tremendous fillip to Javed Akhtar’s simple yet heartwarming lyrics making this song a sure fire chartbuster.

Aasmaan kehta (Mast) - Sandeep Chowta - 1999

This song has a totally fresh feel to it whenever I listen to it. And I simply love the way Sonu almost whispers this song (the first few lines are so silently sung.. listen to it to understand wot I mean) The orchestration is minimal and its the melodious tune that gets more prominence.

Rabba mere (Mujhe kuch kehna hai) - Anu Malik - 2001

A ’’masti’’ song which has even a Sunny Deol like me itching to hit the floor - very good peppy number sung with gusto by Sonu.

Kismat se tum (Pukar) - with Anuradha Paudhwal - AR Rahman - 1999

A song clearly based on classic ragas - flawless rendition - amazing visuals of Madhuri in a blue silk saree in the snow clad peaks of Alaska.

Aisa lagtha hai (Refugee) - With Alka Yagnik - Anu Malik - 2000

Lyrics don’t get more romantic than this - Sonu is at his breezy best - My all time favorite Sonu song !!

Makhmali badan (Road) - with Sanjeevani - Sandesh Shandilya - 2002

There is an underlying sensuousness in the tune and the way Sonu plays with the lyrics - absolutely enchanting number! Puhleeeez lets not tok abt the visuals !

Saathiya (Saathiya) - AR Rahman - 2002

This song won Sonu a lot of awards but I still feel Hariharan in the Tamil version was better - Neway, lovely lyrics by Gulzar and a very catchy tune meant Sonu just cudnt get it wrong ! And with eye catching visuals, it isn’t difficult understanding why it became a winner !

Zindagi maut na (Sarfarosh) - with Kavita Krishnamurthy - Jatin Lalit - 1999

This album had it all - a cute frothy romantic number, a foot tapping bar song, a lovely ghazal by JS but this qawwali was great too - This number fires me up everytime I hear it and full credit to JL for a lovely composition and Sonu for some high energy singing.

Pehli pehli baar (Sanghursh) - with Shradda Pandit - Jatin Lalit - 1999

Not many people might have heard of this song but this album is one of my favorites - Wonderful melodies, simple yet striking lyrics and lots of Sonu. This song in particular starts off brilliantly with Sonu singing the first few bars without any music...I thought even Shradda was very good here but dunno where she is now..

Ishq Bina (Taal) - With AR Rahman, Anuradha Sriram and Sujatha - AR Rahman - 1999

This is another number which hits u hard even at first hear - subtly enticing orchestration, soft rendition, classy lyrics - Name it and the song had it all. And yes, do I need to remind you that it was picturised on the ethereal Ms.Rai :-)

Mera Rang de (The Legend of Bhagat Singh) - With Manmohan Waris - AR Rahman - 2002

A brilliant patriotic number taken to great heights by some high voltage singing by Sonu and MW. I simply freak on this song.

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna (The Legend of Bhagat Singh) - AR Rahman - 2002

Beautiful song originally writen by revolutionary Ram Prasad Bismil, this song moves me to tears every time I hear it. The original sung by Rafi is supposed to be even better but I don’t wanna venture that far.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There were a few others in contention like the other Sonu songs in Refugee, Yeh Dil from Pardes, the title track of PYAR TUNE KYA KIYA, one lovely number in JUNGLE, then Shabba Shabba in DAUD, Dil Deewana from Janasheen (droool) but my list had to have only 20..
